Mr. Sakue, Senior Producer at NHK, shared with us his weekly program, “Welcome Senior.” A concept where by adult, and generally pretty senior, graduates of elementary schools across Japan, go back to their elementary school to share their thoughts with the young ones.  He shared with us his concept and the purpose of doing this show.  We saw one episode where a talking magician goes back to his hometown elementary school where he performed poorly as a student to encourage students to face their “Jekyll & Hyde” and overcome their biggest fears through performing magic.  We saw another episode where a Doctors without Borders physician goes back to discuss the morals of War with a generation of Japanese kids that have no remembrance of War.  We also saw an episode where a brain surgeon talks to the students about being a doctor and the difficult decisions that he has to make, and invites the students to participate in one of his surgeries with a patient that the students met and got a bit psychologically attached to.

The program was very well made, and so touching.  It is highly successful, even after 10 years and has even received the Emmy Award and Japan Prize.  I am not sure where this can be seen or rented, but do check it out if you have a chance.

We also listened to Mr. Fujiki talk about his experience producing a documentary called “Marina.”  This is a documentary based on an Afghan director making a film about a girl after the fall of the Taliban.  I think my eyes were not dry for a minute after the 10th minute.  Truly sad, and this movie was made in 2003 as was this documentary but then you look at Afghanistan now and wonder if anything has improved and what the female protagonist is doing.

The documentary made by NHK follows the 12-year old as she is chosen from by the director and her experience of going from begging on the streets in post-war Afghanistan to becoming the lead for this movie and then returning to the streets after the completion of this movie.

I highly recommend both the movie and this documentary if you can get your hands on a copy.
